Japan’s Sumitomo Metal Mining Co (SMM) said on Monday it has decided to discontinue a long-running feasibility study on an Indonesian nickel processing plant project because of a disagreement with its partner PT Vale Indonesia. The Japanese miner and smelter had been working on the study since 2012 and had expected the project in Pomalaa, Indonesia to help it boost its nickel output to 150,000 tonnes a year, up from about 81,000 tonnes.A spokesperson for SMM said PT Vale had decided to find another partner and there had been some differences between SMM and PT Vale about construction scheduling and costs. “We have made the decision as PT Vale had begun to consider moving forward with the project with another company and as we had not been able to continue negotiations with PT Vale,” an SMM spokesperson said. The spokesperson declined to give details on PT Vale’s new partner.“PT Vale Indonesia remains committed to the development of Pomalaa and we will issue a press release regarding the project within this week,” Bernadus Irmanto, the company’s chief finance officer, told Reuters on Tuesday, declining to give further details. “SMM has concluded that it has no choice but to discontinue the study since it is difficult to maintain its internal and external project study team with no prospect for future progress,” the company said in a statement. The feasibility study was also taking a long time as the covid-19 pandemic has delayed procedures to obtain permits and discussions with PT Vale, the spokesperson added. In February, SMM President Akira Nozaki said his company wanted to make an investment decision on the Pomalaa project “as early as possible,” and that the project aimed to start production in the late-2020s with a capacity of about 40,000 tonnes of mixed sulphide nickel a year. “We will keep our long-term goal of nickel output and continue to make efforts to secure stable supply of natural resources,” the spokesperson said.Source: https://www.mining.com/web/sumitomo-abandons-pomalaa-nickel-project-in-indonesia/

Indonesia has the potential for a new world-class gold and copper mine located in Onto, Hu'u District, Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara . This potential was revealed based on the results of research conducted by a mining company, PT Sumbawa Timur Mining . In a press conference that was held virtually on Thursday (21/4/2022), PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) President Director Bede Evans explained that Onto's potential gold source in West Nusa Tenggara is 1.1 billion tons, consisting of copper , gold, Inferred mineral resources and others. The estimated potential for mineral resources has increased by 20 percent or 0.4 billion tons from the research results announced in December 2019.It was stated that Onto's mineral resource potential was part of the Hu'u project owned by STM, the holder of the 7th generation contract of work signed by the Indonesian government on February 19, 1998. Meanwhile, Vale SA is the majority shareholder of STM through Esatern Star Resources Pty Ltd. 80 percent and PT Antam Tbk 20 percent. "This latest estimate of mineral resource potential reinforces our belief that Onto's mineral resource has the potential to be developed into a world-class copper mining operation," Evans explained. Evans explained that the estimated mineral resource potential was the result of drilling 74 holes with a total depth of 74,130 meters. It is planned that drilling will resume in 2022 to support further studies to determine the size, area and characteristics of Onto's mineral resource potential. In addition, this follow-up drilling is also to provide more complete data for use in various engineering studies of the Hu'u Project. To date, in total, STM has completed 108 drill holes (total depth of 115,591 meters) within the KK return (at Onto and other prospects) since exploration began in 2010 When asked by Kompas.com about the potential revenue generated by STM as well as its contribution to the Indonesian government, Evans said that until now it has not been confirmed. "Currently we are conducting various engineering studies , it seems that we cannot project the revenue. Because it is still too far away. Production will only start in 2023-2025," said Evans.Evans said that although he was happy with the potential of this mineral resource, his party still had homework to do, such as studying various technical, environmental, social and financial factors that were part of the feasibility study that was currently being carried out. "Primarily, we hope that the ongoing feasibility study phase will determine which mining operation is technically and economically feasible, and that STM can develop it further," said Evans.Source: https://www.kompas.com/wiken/read/2022/04/23/044900481/indonesia-punya-potensi-tambang-emas-tembaga-kelas-dunia-di-onto-ntb

Indonesia’s EV dream gets $15 bln spark of reality

www.reuters.com

Indonesia’s electric dreams could become reality. The country is itching to make the most of its rich natural resources by developing an electric-vehicle supply chain within its own borders. As battery-powered vehicles made up less than than 1% of its auto sales last year, it has been a hard sell. Momentum is now building, though.A consortium led by battery behemoth LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) read more is investing $9 billion in a vertically integrated manufacturing project including everything from nickel smelting to assembling finished products, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. On Friday, rival CATL (300750.SZ)announced it and partners would invest $6 billion in a similar, separate project. The government’s ultimate goals are far more ambitious. Jakarta wants to make some 140GW of batteries in 2030 – close to global output in 2020, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. That’s bold: policymakers’ plans hinge on selling two-thirds of those batteries in Indonesia itself, where they hope to have 2.2 million electric cars on the road by the end of the decade. Indonesians bought fewer than 1 million cars last year, almost all gas guzzlers. Electric cars also compete with hugely popular electric scooters. Nearby countries like Thailand and Vietnam are only just beginning their own efforts to foster sales of greener vehicles.Recent global events have given the Indonesian government’s plan another, unexpected catalyst. A potent mix of war in Ukraine and Covid-19 in China snarled supply chains and inflated raw material prices, bloating battery costs by as much as a fifth according to Bernstein. Meanwhile a financial crisis at major nickel producer Tsingshan triggered a market meltdown that doubled the metal’s price to $100,000 per tonne, forcing the London Metal Exchange to halt trade. Indonesia is the world’s largest nickel producer, so even with the price dropping back somewhat since, having a base there suddenly looks a lot more enticing for battery makers. It can offer secure supplies of a key ingredient and the chance to diversify beyond traditional manufacturing hubs such as China. For investors, more developed markets like China and the United States still overshadow opportunities in Southeast Asia. That may explain why shares in LG Energy Solutions and CATL hardly budged following news of their plans. Getting ahead of the pack in Indonesia, though, is still smart driving. Source: https://www.reuters.com/breakingviews/indonesias-ev-dream-gets-15-bln-spark-reality-2022-04-20/

Metso Outotec says it will deliver its 100th Anode Casting Shop to PT Smelting’s (PTS) copper smelter in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. The OEM, which says it has been a frontrunner in the development of anode casting technology for several decades, says the Gresik project is a true milestone for the company.Today, most of the world’s copper anodes are produced with Metso Outotec’s proprietary anode casting technology, it stated. Sami Maaniittu, Director, Anode Casting, Metso Outotec, said the system to be delivered to PTS is one of the world’s largest Twin Wheel Anode Casting Shops with a guaranteed capacity of 120 t/h.Metso Outotec’s predecessor companies started the development and testing of automatic anode casting already in 1969 in Harjavalta, Finland. “Before that, castings were made manually with controlled ladle tilting,” Maaniittu said. “The first anode weighing and casting machine was delivered to the USA in 1972, and a year later, the first complete anode casting shop was installed at the Harjavalta Smelter in Finland.”Metso Outotec’s Twin Wheel Casting concept, paving the way for today’s standard, was developed in the 1990s. The equipment design significantly improves casting capacity and provides more efficient use of floor space, according to the company. The wheels are supported on large centre bearings and driven by double drive systems developed to eliminate the backlash effect in the wheel movement and to ensure even quality. The first Twin Wheel Anode Casting Shop systems were delivered in 1997. Since then, the Twin Wheel has become the first choice of high-capacity anode casting shops, according to Metso Outotec.Today, most of the anode casting shops supplied by Metso Outotec are fully electric without any hydraulic systems. Their high level of automation ensures premium anode quality with excellent weight accuracy and low reject rate combined with high capacity and availability, the company said. Metso Outotec Anode Casting Shops are safe and easy to operate and feature low energy consumption. In addition to full anode casting systems, Metso Outotec offers a variety of modular updates for the existing installations, including automation and services.Source: https://im-mining.com/2022/04/20/metso-outotec-to-deliver-100th-anode-casting-shop-to-indonesian-copper-smelter/

The presence of Government Regulation Number 15 of 2022 concerning Treatment of Taxes and/or Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) in the Coal Mining Business Sector is considered to have the potential to encourage state revenue.Energy and Mining Law observer at Tarumanegara University, Ahmad Redi, revealed that the presence of this regulation and the condition of coal commodity prices have the potential to boost state revenue. "Our revenue projection can be above 25% or even 28% of the mineral and coal PNBP projection," said Redi to Kontan, Monday (18/4).Redi continued, given the current high price of coal and the massive demand for coal, it is unlikely that the price will suddenly drop significantly. Redi added that the amount of tariffs imposed for IUPK as a continuation of the PKP2B was quite fair.According to him, this amount can provide an increase in state revenues. Meanwhile, business actors are protected when coal prices decline or are in low conditions.Kontan noted, referring to Minerba One Data Indonesia (MODI) data, the realization of PNBP in 2021 reached Rp 75.48 trillion. This number is the highest in the last decade. This PNBP sourced from deadrent of Rp. 0.59 trillion, Royalty Income of Rp. 43.74 trillion, Sales of Mining Products of Rp. 30.62 trillion and other income of Rp. 0.54 trillion. For this year, the government targets PNBP Minerba to reach Rp 42.37 trillion, of which the realization has now reached Rp 26.16 trillion, equivalent to 61.74% of the target.Source: https://industri.kontan.co.id/news/regulasi-pnbp-baru-sektor-batubara-berpotensi-dongkrak-penerimaan-negara

Indonesia aims to set up coal levy agency by June

www.mining.com
2972 Views
Indonesia’s government aims to establish a “special entity” by June to help secure coal supplies for the state power utility company and collect levies, energy minister Arifin Tasrif told parliament on Wednesday. Following a coal supply crunch at the start of the year that was blamed on miners’ poor compliance with a domestic sales requirement, a senior cabinet minister had proposed forming an agency to collect levies and using that revenue to help the utility PLN pay for its coal needs at market prices.Since then, however, the government and a parliamentary committee have agreed that PLN will continue to buy coal at a maximum price of $70 per tonne. “There are a number of schemes and programs being discussed, but the main point is several big miners will be assigned to supply the coal (to PLN) and the price gap would be paid by the levy,” Arifin told parliament members on Wednesday.Indonesia requires coal miners to sell 25% of their output to the domestic market at capped prices to help the government control energy prices at home. However, miners’ compliance with that rule deteriorated after global coal prices surged and they preferred to export their supplies instead. Indonesia banned coal exports in January and set stricter rules for the domestic sales requirement. Arifin told parliament on Wednesday the size of levies imposed on coal miners would depend on the size of their operations and other specifications, while other details on implementation were still being discussed.Source: https://www.mining.com/web/indonesia-aims-to-set-up-coal-levy-agency-by-june/
